The Idea

Comprehensive analysis of the types of resources, processes, and technologies employed.

An essential component of the circular economy is reducing the use of raw materials, whether it's processing iron ore into steel or converting fossil hydrocarbons into plastics. In addition to the economical, efficient, and sustainable use of energy and materials and extending the lifespan of products, the circular economy views waste as a resource. By 'thinking in life cycles' resource consumption and emissions into the environment can be reduced.
The durability of products depends largely on their manufacturing, use and recycling processes. Linear methods such as single use and disposal have a detrimental effect on the environment. Circular design, recycled or bio-based materials and recycling according to the waste hierarchy significantly reduce this impact.
Efficient use of materials, low energy consumption and maximum levels of reusability are crucial. Suitable technologies can ensure access to high-quality, bio-based and circular resources.

Results

The PA tool is a quick pre-assessment method that can be used to determine whether an activity can be classified as circular according to the basic frameworks and principles of the circular economy. This includes, for example, the European Commission's categorization system for the circular economy and the 9R framework.

The PA Tool contains a database with benchmark values (e.g. kgCO2eq./kg, kWh/kg, recycled wt.%/kg per product) for common products that are manufactured and consumed and represent comparative values as general sustainability indicators.
